Healthy Holiday Eating Tips.

I feel like Christmas is all about stuffing your face with everything in sight. You know, turkey, potatoes, pasta, Lindt chocolate, Ferrero Rocher chocolates, and if you come from a traditional Indian family (like me), curries and naan too! Let’s not forget about ALL the wine and champagne…

It’s like the holidays never give you a break with food/drinks. Everyday is another party, another celebration, another dinner, and then by January you’re 984752076 pounds heavier. AMIRIGHT?!!?

And we ALL love to make New Year resolutions about going to the gym more often (& never really stick to it). Guilty!

Well, there’s a few things that we should all be doing to help us get through the holiday season without gaining the pounds, yet still enjoying ALL the food and drinks that come our way.

BALANCE has always been my moto. It’s worked well for me so I’m sticking to it. Nobody wants to be that girl who only fills her plate with salad. Or the girl that passes on dessert. NO NO, I want that desert!

Okay, so here are some tips and tricks to staying healthy during the holiday season:

1. Portion control:

This is KEY at dinner parties. Maybe don’t eat all the pasta, and all the potatoes, and all the bread. Like, choose your carbs wisely. Have one or two. Preferably one. Or, reallllly small portions of all three. Here's the thing I've noticed: when people have Christmas parties to go to in the evening, they usually don't eat all day, hoping to be starving when it comes time to eat. And then when it's time to eat, they stuff themselves to the max. This isn't smart thinking. You're in fact ruining your metabolism, and not doing anything good for your body. EAT. Don't starve yourself throughout the day. Your body needs the three meals. What's actually best, is if you snack a little before heading to the dinner party. Like have some healthy, fibre-filled foods before going. This way you aren't stuffing your face at the party.

2. Find a way to work out:

Whether it's the gym, or whether it's busting out your yoga mat at home, DO IT. Because this way you can have dessert guilt free. Personally for me, going to the gym is a struggle. I still do it, but I'm hardly ever motivated to go. In fact, lately, I've hit a wall when it comes to going to the gym. A wall that I need to get past ASAP. (So, if you have any tips, get at me!) I was really into it for a while. You know, going twice, even three times a week, and now not so much. Need to get back at it. However, if the gym isn't your thing, do yoga at home. I love Yoga By Candace on YouTube. My coworker and I actually find time at work during lunch to get a 45 min. workout in. It's perfect.

3. Manage your alcohol intake:

This is a hard one during the holiday, but a must! Your calories don't just add up with food. There's a shit ton in a glass of wine, and even more in a glass of champagne. No one is saying don't drink. But again, I'm very conscious of the things that go into my body now that I'm 30, and balance is everything. Have a glass of wine, and then a glass of water. Do that all night, and your body will thank you. Trust me.

4. Get in your steps:

This is another way to get your body moving. I try for 10,000 steps a day, and as much as I'd like to hit that goal, I'm usually at about 4000-5000 steps a day. However, with the holidays in full force, push yourself to do more. Take the stairs if you can, walk to work, take mini breaks throughout the day and go for walks. Working at a desk all day can really take a toll on your back/spine. You absolutely need to get in your steps.

Okay so those are my tips for you guys. If you have anymore good, healthy eating tips over the holidays that have helped YOU, please share. I think we all need to be accountable for each other.

This year, like I mentioned, Andrew and I will be in India/Sri Lanka over the holidays, so I have to be EXTRA accountable, because there's just something about traveling that gets your appetite going, no?! It's like, when I'm on vacation I just want to eat EVERYTHING, and try everything. I'll be getting in A LOT of steps though, so I'm not too worried.

On another note. Let's talk about this cozy, slouched sweater. It's no secret I love my clothing oversized. SO oversized that It's falling off my shoulder. In fact, sometimes I browse the men's section...for myself. You just never know when you'll find a perfectly cute tee or sweater that's oversized. Also, no surprise that I like to keep colour to a minimum, so this sweater works well. It's the perfect fall sweater if you ask me. I love wrapping a giant blanket scarf around this one too.

Ok, tonight I'm doing some more Christmas decorating! At my parent's place this time.
